10 Simple Ways To Increase Speed Of Your Computer

Most of us who use computers maximally get frustrated when our computers have slowed down. Naturally, we look for someone to help us so we can increase the speed of our computers. This can sometimes be a further waste of time as we try to look for someone when actually, we can do the jobs ourselves. Here's how:

1. Get rid of those unnecessary wallpapers. Simply go for the basic built-in designs to improve the speed a great deal. If you can't help it, don't stretch the wallpaper because dragging can slow down the functions. Also, remove animations that aren't needed by your programs.

2. If you have drivers installed on your computer, make sure you do frequent updates because updating can improve the speed of your programs.

3. Sometimes we can't help but open several programs at the same time because we need to do multi-tasking. If we have to do this, we need to minimize those programs we aren't currently using.

4. Remove the message that says you are starting Windows 95/98 because this can slow down booting. To remove this, just go to c:\ and look for the file Msdos.sys. Then remove the Read-only option. Open this in Notepad then go to options and change by adding BootDelay=0.

5. To restart Windows, simply hold down the Shift key to restart Windows instead of restarting the whole system which can take longer.

6. You may also try working on a lower resolution so that you can move faster with your PC.

7. Regularly defragment your computer so that files can be consolidated into single files. This will surely speed up the functions of your computer.

8. For faster ejection of CDs, simply right-click on the CD drive letter in My Computer and choose Eject. Icons will be removed as well which could somehow slow down the process.

9. Get rid of fonts that you don't usually use. Just go to fonts under c:\windows and remove those fonts that you no longer need.

10. Get rid of unnecessary files by constantly emptying your Recycle Bin and removing temporary Internet files. These take up space and of course, needs to be read by your CPU every time you boot. Even your email inbox should be regularly cleaned up to enhance the speed of your usage.

Free Software Programs Is No Sweat At All

Are you tired of shelling out money again and again for software applications? I bet many people are, since software can be expensive. So, never doubt the idea that the Internet has it all, because it does. The Internet even has free software programs you can download.

However, the real problem is looking for them. Here are some tips to get the free software you need.

Think Open-Source

Many computer experts and techie communities are developing open source programs for the benefit of all without spending a single dime on them. Open-source programs were made as a response to the sky-rocketing prices of most software programs.

Some examples of these open-source programs are Mozilla Firefox for internet browsing, Open Office for office applications, Foxit for pdf file reading, and Pidgin for instant messaging. These are just some open-source software programs, but you'll be surprised at what you can find when you search for them (on Google, for example; or from your techie friends).

Dig In Software Download Search Engines

A simple search on your trusty search engine for the keywords free software download will yield a lot of download search engines or websites dedicated to these free software programs. Most of them are download search engines which direct you to the specific software you need from that website itself. It also has categories on what purpose you need the program for, which greatly helps narrowing down the search.

Most of the licensed software programs are available in trial versions on most of these download search engines. Although there are still a lot of available software programs which have the full version.

Utilizing Torrents

If everything else fails and you need something you can't find using the tips listed above, torrents is the last resort, because torrents are the most diverse and powerful file sharing built. If you have your own connection at home with a good broadband connection, this is absolutely for you.

Torrents are used for file-sharing using torrent programs to download the file being shared. Basically anything and EVERYTHING can be found in torrents. Where can you find these torrents? Searching for torrents in your search engine will direct you to the most popular torrent search engines, which will help you find the software programs you're looking for.

The Verdict?

Looking for free software programs using the Internet is no sweat at all. With the right keywords and the right knowledge on where to get them, you'll be getting that software you need without paying a dime.

Tip to format your Computer

Have you ever experienced your computer being attacked by virus or spy? Or it may be some operating files that are damaged. Or for some other unknown reasons that makes your computer becomes unstable. Or it may simply refuse to boot up completely.

If so, the only way to overcome the problem is to format the hard disk and reinstall the Microsoft operating system. It is a non complicated procedure and takes only 45 – 60 minutes to do. The time may vary depending on the speed of your computer.

But before we proceed, you must make sure that you have all your needed data stored in other drive (D, E, F, etc.) that is not the operating system drive (generally Drive C). If you do not have multiple drives in you hard disk, you must retrieve all your data to an external drive like the thump or mobile.

You must also have your CD or DVD software such as Window, Office, hardware drivers and so on in hand. When you are ready, turn on your computer and do the followings:

  1. Hit the “Delete” or “Del” key immediately at the boot up. This will bring you to the CMOS set up screen.
  2. Use the arrow key to navigate you to the “Advanced Bios Feature”
  3. Hit enter to view the Bios Feature screen.
  4. Moving the arrow keys on the key board to shift hi-light line to the “First Boot Device” line and hit enter.
  5. Select CDROM using the keys Page up and Page down on the key board and press enter.
  6. Now press the key “Escape” or “Esc” to bring you back to the “Advanced Bios Feature” again.
  7. Moving the arrow keys on the key board to shift hi-light to the “Save and exit” line.
  8. Insert Windows disk into your CDROM and close it.
  9. Hit “Enter”, hit “Y”, and again “Enter” on the key board.
  10. This will take you out from CMOS set up to the normal start up procedure.
  11. Simply let the computer boot until you see the writing “Boot from Atapi CDROM”, then hit “Enter” quickly before it moves on.
  12. You will see “Press any key to boot from CD” on screen and again hit enter.

Now sit back and relax as it will take your computer a little while to work you to the page titled “Windows XP or Vista Set Up”, to continue on your formatting procedure.

  1. Once there, hit “D” to delete partition “C”.
  2. Hit “L” and “C” in the two following pages.

Windows will start formatting and copy files into your computer to install. This will take sometimes. Once this is done, Window will reboot.

  1. Ignore when Windows bring you to step 11 above or when you see the

Writing “Boot from Atapi CDROM” this time. Windows will bypass

CDROM boot up and goes direct to boot from your drive C.

Windows will now install all new files to your computer and set up divers for your accessories like mouse and keyboard. This is a long process of about 30-35 minutes. You will need to answer a few simple “yes” and “no” questions for Windows to move ahead especially towards the end of the installation. Just read and answer as appropriate.

Once Windows is completed, you should reboot it and redo the steps 1-10 above to reverse back the first boot of your computer to drive C. Take your CD off your computer.

You will need to install Office and some other drivers for main board and other hard wares. Now you will have yourself a stable operating system and save yourself some US$ 50-70.

email me if you still have problem.

BackTrack 2.0 Final Due End of Febuary

We have been working really hard on BackTrack 2.0 Final.
I managed to change kernels (twice), and I think I broke some sort of record in fuxxing up BT :)
Things are looking good however, with some nice features included into v.2.0 final. These are just a few:

* Updated to Kernel 2.6.19
* Broadcom Wifi drivers +injection (bcm43xx)
* IPW2200 Wifi drivers + injection
* RTL8180 Wifi drivers + injection
* RTL8187 Wifi drivers + injection
* Support for a wider range of Wifi cards
* Fixed BT JTR PXE Cluster Pack
* Added Metasploit PXE ninja
* Updated tools and packages

Things are looking extremely sexy, and we hope to have a final release by the end of Febuary.

Microsoft Bugs vs Features

I've been watching the developments of the "Word 2007" doc bugs fiasco. Its seems like Microsoft are calling these crashes "features" rather than bugs.

I'm not sure if this is the result of IT security media contorting the infomation they recieve and presenting it in a provocative way, or if Microsoft are really trying to blow off these bugs as part of their application design.

To make things clear - The bugs that I released are proof of concepts which cause denial of service. In their current state, they do not present a real threat to Word 2007 users. However, having an application crash or consume 100% CPU on a machine due to malformed user input - is probably the most classical description of a software bug.

It also seems that there is no mention of the HLP heap overflow, which probably presents more danger than all 3 doc bugs combined.

BackTrack 3 in the oven!

Max, Martin and I have started working on BackTrack 3....and boy...it's sexy. I know I've said this before about BackTrack 2...but really....it's sexy...sexier than ever before.
New shiny kernel, new patched wifi drivers, compiz working out of the box (so we can all pwn like r0ckstarz). We are planning on new public repositories for BT3 - for better support for updates and HD installs.

We still don't have an ETA for BT3...but one thing is for sure - it will be worth the wait! More info about BT3 dev to follow in the next few weeks.

BT3 Beta ETA - 14th Dec 2007

I've finally managed to pull Max Martin and me out of the proverbial work cycle we're in - we plan to release the Beta on the 14th Dec 2007.
"Beta" means we think this version is stable and ready, and need final confirmation from the community before adding a few more modules and tweaks, and calling it a final.

There will be 2 releases of BT3 - a ~700 mb iso file, and a ~1 GB USB stick image. Compiz will NOT be included in the stock 700 mb bt3 iso. We have to fight for each MB on the iso...and compiz is far from being useful in a penetration test environment. We DO however plan to have compiz modules for download separately, and to add them to the 1 GB distribution.

Hurray!
